Abstract

Waterlogging is the most serious global problem in agriculture affecting the soils in the United States, Russia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China. The higher irrigation requirements for high yielding varieties of crops has led to the introduction of canal irrigation system which has given birth to waterlogging and soil salinity affecting the cropping pattern, crop productivity and fertility of soil. The problem of waterlogging and soil salinity affected farmers’ income, employment opportunities and land use requiring immediate solutions in terms of choosing tolerant varieties, conjunctive use of canal water with poor quality ground water, biodrainage, traditional drainage system along with application of soil ammendments like FYM, gypsum etc. that can help in mitigating waterlogging.
