Abstract

Eggs are considered as good source of inexpensive, high quality protein and choline rich food with about 14 per cent average protein content. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to find out the export competitiveness of eggs in India from 1997-98 to 2015-16 (20 years) using Nominal Protection Coefficient (NPC) value. The structural change and direction of trade in egg was analyzed using Markov Chain approach. The study revealed that India lacked competitiveness in global market for overall period. During period-I (1997-98 to 2005-06) Nominal Protection Coefficient (NPC) value found to be 0.81indicating moderately competitive. The result of Markov Chain Analysis for direction of trade pointed out that Oman was the loyal market followed by Afghanistan and UAE for export of eggs from India. Hence, efforts are needed to promote exports to these countries by supplying quality eggs and make its price competitive in the international market.
