Constraint Analysis of Quality Seed Production in Telangana using Garrett’s Ranking Technique

Seed is the important input for quality output. There are several factors which play significant role in enhancing production and productivity of crop, while seed is one among those factors which is a critical input for improving the agricultural productivity in countries like India, where majority of the farmers are small and marginal. Quality seed is an important contributor to the production and productivity but quality seed production at farmer’s level is a drawback in the Indian conditions due to various reasons. Keeping this in view a study was conducted in the Telangana state to document the constraints in the quality seed production faced by the farmers during 2019-20 with the sample size of 240 farmers who are involved in the seed production. The results were analysed using Garrett Ranking Technique. The study has revealed that, requirement of high investment, difficulty in marketing one’s own seed from farmers to farmers (lack of trust worthiness) and small land holding status are major constraints whereas lack of adequate man power, poor participation in programmes and workshops for acquiring knowledge and skill in seed production and prevalence of rigid and standard quality system were in the decreasing order of importance were been the main constraints at farmers level. All stakeholders such as SAU, ICAR and government organization with enable policy support acts as drive for vibrant seed production and distribution and making quality seed available to farmers at affordable prices to uplift the sustainable production and productivity of crops.
