Abstract

Skill acquisition by the beneficiaries of various employment promotion programme not only depend on the relevancy of it and work opportunity associated with the programme but the socio-economic background of beneficiaries which even control the relevancy and scope. The background of individual support or wraparound services such as education, occupation land holding can help them to keenly explore the vocational training that will ultimately improve their economic condition. A study was undertaken in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh to analyse one such promising skill development initiatives i.e., Chhattisgarh State Skill Development Mission (CSSDM) where the district was purposively selected as it had higher number of certified beneficiaries for sampling adequacy. Vocational training was conducted in several courses out of which top five courses having maximum certified beneficiaries were selected. 250 respondents were selected with the help of proportionate random sampling method i.e., from Garment making (86), ICT (80), Electricals (30), Medical & Nursing (29) and Construction (25). The study found that close to half of the respondents (47.20%) were from middle age group (i.e., 28-32 yrs.). Majority of the respondents (59.20%) of the respondents were male. Maximum respondents (38.00%) were belonging to OBC caste category and half of the respondents had completed their education up to higher secondary level. Also, cent percent respondents were found to be doing private sector services when they started their training. Majority of them (56.80%) were marginal farmers and had medium level of income (68.40%) i.e. Rs. 63,659 – 1, 20,537 per annum.
