Stress experienced during COVID-19 pandemic and coping strategies sought by homemakers of Ludhiana

Abstract

COVID-19 rooted serious distress all over the globe. Apart from passing the uncertainty, lockdown imposed in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic loaded the homemaker with additional workload and family crisis thus resulting in stress, anxiety and depression among the homemakers. The present study was therefore intended to look for the stress experienced by homemaker during COVID-19 pandemic and the coping strategies sought by them. A questionnaire was created using Google forms and was circulated via different online platforms. Results revealed that homemaker experienced physical stress, psychological stress and familial stress sometimes during pandemic whereas, not every homemaker faced financial crisis. To overcome this crisis, majority of homemakers tried to forget unpleasant things and looked for different ways to handle such situation during the pandemic. Help from family or friend, inspiration by looking at people who had more problems and sufferings during the lockdown, adequate rest in a day and recreational activities to divert mind away from stress causing situation were some other strategies adopted by respondents to cope up with stress.
