Physio-chemical and Nutritional Properties of Senna leaves (Senna angustifolia) Powder
Abstract
Senna, commonly known as Cassia angustifolia, is a ayurvedic herb. It’s referred to as Swarna Patri in Sanskrit. It is mostly employed as a blood purifier, a laxative to relieve constipation, and a remedy for skin issues. It includes anthraquinone, a strong natural laxative that has received World Health Organization (WHO) approval. Due to its laxative effects, it is used to cleanse the gastrointestinal tract prior to diagnostic procedures like colonoscopies. 1-2 teaspoons of dry leaves powder dissolved in hot water can be used to treat digestive discomfort and constipation. Senna leaves powder was examined in this study for both its physical characteristics and nutritional composition. Senna leaves powder has bulk density, hydration capacity and hydration index, swelling capacity, swelling index of 0.49 ± 0.03 g/ml, 0.52 ± 0.04 ml, and 0.29 ± 0.03 ml, 1.08 ± 0.02 ml, 1.59 ± 0.03 ml, respectively. Senna leaves powder was shown to have increased levels of calcium, iron, crude protein, and crude fiber. Our research suggests that senna leaves powder can be a healthier regular consumption option because it contains more nutrients that are good for your health.
