Dyeing industry of Ludhiana, a vital contributor to India’s exports, aims for sustainability but faces many hurdles. The present study delves into the sustainable practices and challenges faced by the units. Twenty five dyeing units were selected purposively and in-depth data was collected from the Heads of the dyeing units or their Executive Managers using an interview schedule. Results revealed that cotton was the most common fabric dyed, soft flow dyeing machine was the most popular and reactive dyes were used by majority of the units. While awareness about waterless dyeing exists, adoption lags behind. More than half of the selected units were aware about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Lack of legislation & regulations for CSR and sustainable practices were major problems faced by the units. Despite progress with eco-certifications and common effluent treatment plants, significant leaps are needed for true sustainability. The industry is on the path to sustainability, but stricter regulations and better eco-friendly practices are crucial for a truly green future.
