Abstract

This study was conducted to identify and compare the constraints faced by faculty members of three selected Northern State Agricultural Universities in India. The study sample was composed of a total of 360 faculty members. Data were collected from each university, 120 faculty members, and 40 each from teaching, research, and extension through a self-structured questionnaire. A list of 17 constraints regarding acquisition of extension competencies was prepared by consulting the relevant literature and experts’ advice. The response of the faculty was taken on a three point continuum i.e. always, sometime and never with the score of 3, 2, and 1 respectively. Excessive workload and lack of in-service training were the major constraints perceived by all faculty members of different Northern State Agricultural Universities whereas absence of formative and summative evaluation was perceived as minor constraint. University-wise significant difference was observed for constraints perceived by all faculty members. So, proactive actions are needed to overcome constraints hindering faculty members from acquiring desired extension competencies.
