Perception and accessibility of quality fish seed by farmers

Abstract

The production of good quality fish seed of different species in adequate quantity is the foremost important thing in order to boost up the aquaculture industry. A major portion of the fish seed was reported to come from Bankura district and hence, Bankura district was selected purposively for the study. Total 100 grow out farmers were surveyed to identify the perception and accessibility of quality fish seed by them. The first five characteristics of quality fish seed as perceived by the grow out farmers in the study area were normal body structure (2.99) followed by no external sign of infection (2.94), touch (2.81), seed movement (2.79) and normal mucus secretion (2.76). With regard to the parameters like credibility, proximity, timeliness and availability of seed in adequate quantity, more than 70 per cent farmers reported that they were highly satisfied and in parameters like purity and performance, more than 50 per cent of them stated that they were highly satisfied.
