Socio-economic and socio-psychological traits of Makhana growers of Kosi region

Abstract

Bihar is an agrarian state where 85 per cent of the people are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. Makhana based farming system is a major economic activity in Bihar. Present exploratory study was carried out to estimate empirically the socio-economic, agro-economic, socio-psychological status of Makhana growers of Purnia and Katihar district of Kosi region. Face to face interview was conducted with 120 farmers with the help of semi-structure interview schedule. The statistical tools used were, descriptive statistics. It was found that mean age of the respondents, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were 47.15 years, 9.580 and 20.31 per cent respectively whereas, 70 per cent of farmers were found in the category of age group 40-60. It was found that mean of formal education in years, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were 8.25 years, 3.63 and 44.05 per cent respectively whereas, 38 per cent of respondents were in the category of secondary education i.e. 5-10 years. It was found that mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of Family size were 7.11, 2.57 and 36.14 respectively whereas50.83 per cent of respondents were having Family size 3-6 category. of the selected farmers were 128.33, 12.41 and 9.67 per cent whereas 67 per cent of the selected farmers in Kosi region were in the category of favourable attitude scoring 116-114.
