Prevalence of Abuses Faced by Deserted Women by their NRI Husbands in Doaba Region of Punjab

Abstract

Violence against women is a global issue where women faced varied forms of domestic violence such as mental, economic, sexual, physical and social violence. But desertion of women by their Non-Resident Indian (NRI) husband is an emergent, unique form of violence against women. In the present paper an attempt has been made to through light on the problems faced by the abandoned wives of NRI grooms with special reference to the different types of abuses faced by them from four districts of Doaba region of Punjab namely Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Nawansahar (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar at present) and Kapurthala. A sample of 60 respondents was drawn from each district by using PPS (Probability Proportional to Size) and Snow Ball sampling technique. Data were collected through standardised scale and a self – structured standardised interview Schedule. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the deserted women faced physical, emotional, verbal, economic and social abuses by their in-laws and society too which makes their life more miserable.
