Abstract

Studies were conducted on pear fruit damaging potential of depredatory birds as well as their behaviour towards two neem based formulations viz. Econeem and Nimbecidine. The main species of birds viz. roseringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), slatyheaded parakeet (Psittacula himalayana), blossomheaded parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala) and redbilled blue magpie (Cissa erythrorhyncha) were found feeding on fruits of pear. Spray of neem based formulations Econeem and Nimbecidine at 1.0% concentration in each case on pear trees showed poor repellent effect on birds but avoidance of the latter in the treated area indicated decline in fruit damage. In the 2nd application of these formulations after 12 days of 1st spray, birds continued damaging pear fruits and did not avoid treated area. However, Econeem was found to be superior over Nimbecidine.
