Diversification and Innovation in Farming System Changes the Livelihood of the Farmer of District Samba of Jammu Region (J&K)-A Success Story

Abstract

The concept of diversification remains incomplete and subdued if it is not supported by the diversified farming systems. In the agricultural context, diversification can be regarded as the re-allocation of some of a farm's productive resources, such as land, capital, farm equipment and paid labour, into new activities. These can be new crops or livestock products, value-adding activities, provision of services to other farmers. Vinod Kumar (33), an innovative farmer of village Kralian, Vijaypur block of District Samba, has around 10 years of experience in farming. He owns 6 ha of land and besides this he also took 4 ha land on lease from other farmers. A major producer of Off season vegetables, improved varieties of paddy and wheat, turmeric grower, fruit and forestry plantations, etc. Before intervention of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jammu, Vinod Kumar mostly concentrated on the traditional Rice –Wheat cropping system and few vegetables for home consumption. Krishi Vigyan Kendra Jammu has intervened in 2004 and shown them the potential of vegetable cultivation and he was provided necessary skills in off season vegetables. Apart he was also guided about the latest varieties in paddy and wheat. He was also given proper orientation about marketing. This has motivated him to-Grow off season vegetable production of cucurbits. Grow vegetable specially Onion, Cauliflower and spices like turmeric commercially along with Rice & Wheat. Commercial cultivation of fodder crops like berseem. In 2013, his total income from various crops was 12.55 lakhs. He was awarded at various occasions at national and state levels. By looking into the success in turmeric plantation in 2013 where in he earned Rs 18000/-from merely 1.5 kanals of land, he is planning to start a processing plant of turmeric. Vinod kumar not only succeeded in facing challenges in farming but also developed himself as a role model in the agriculture and allied activities for the other farmers of the area. By looking into his zeal and enthusiasm he can be a big agripruneur in days to come.
