Abstract

This paper emphasizes the importance of goal orientation and goal consciousness among higher educational institutes and the outcome of setting goals. A conception of institutional goals may serve as the basic element in a formulation of the institution's policy, philosophy, or ideology. Stated goals help to tie together assumptions, values, and hopes for the institution into a coherent policy that then provides standards for present and future institutional operations. Clearly stated goals also enables individuals and agencies external to the institute to be clear about its activities and what can be expected of it. Goal orientation implies the ability to set goals, achieve goals, review goals, goal dissemination, reflection of goals, and mechanisms to monitor progress of goals.
