India is one of the largest importer of defence equipment in the world. A healthy GDP growth is required to create jobs for youth of the country. Political leadership has set a target of 5 Tn $ economy by 2025 for the nation, which is possible only with overall development in all sectors. Indian private industry, especially MSMEs has the potential and ability to manufacture quality defence equipment and hence boost GDP growth and also generate jobs. The government policies of DPP 2016, DPrP, Strategic Partnership, easing of FDI rules, improvement in ease of doing business, ToT policies, making industry friendly offset policies, and even publishing a Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap-2018 (TPCR) are attempts towards bringing in an honest, transparent and interactive system to kickstart industry manufacturing of defence equipment. Since the manufacturing has not taken off the way government envisages, the issues of Industry need to be understood and addressed. Creation of level playing field, confirmed sustainable orders quantity, escrow accounts, quicker and sustained decisions, easing of quality check procedures, economy of scales, opening of testing facilities and better synergy between all stake holders should propel Indian defence industries towards realising national goal of self-reliance in Indian defence equipment manufacture.
