Abstract

Modern retail activity is a sunrise sector in India and abroad. Several retail giants have been expanding their activities towards retailing. It provides employment to millions of people all over the globe. In India, it is the second largest employer after agriculture. There is a vast potential for its operations in India in the years to come. A study has been conducted in Visakhapatnam city with the objectives to cover an overview of retail industry, employment and wages, A suggestive framework has been given in the conclusion. This paper has tested the hypothesis of differences in wages (income), nature of employment, total family income and expenditure of employees among three segments (Trade, Manufacturing and Services) of sample retail enterprises and inferred that there have been significant differences, found in the nature of employment, annual total family income of employees among different segments of retail enterprises. No significant differences have been identified in wages and total family expenditure of employees in three different segments of retail enterprises.
