In recent decades the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) turned out to be a vital strategy for companies to survive in a ruthless market environment. In a condition where market's shift and customers’ preferences becomes more unpredictable and complex, adopting CSR strategy could be a powerful tool for survival and sustainability of the companies in India. Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) provides a bridge between Corporate and the society and it ensures the business organizations a way to meet their philanthropic CSR obligations. There are three types of CSR viz. Philanthropic, Strategic and Embedded CSR (Jothi M, 2010) The Philanthropic CSR is also known as immature version of CSR and it plays a very important role in the CSR agenda of every business organizations in India. The Business organizations irrespective of size and turnover may discharge their philanthropic CSR activities like women empowerment programmes, environmental conservation, protection and pollution control programmes, social and economic development programmes – child education, HIV awareness, sex education, poverty alleviation etc., through the NGOs to the society. The present study, therefore, is an attempt to explore the role of NGOs in philanthropic CSR practices in India, further it aim to shed light on various categories of NGOs functioning with the aim to achieve the socio-economic development of people in India.
