The data collected in Ludhiana district of Punjab for three months during 2009–2010 from 25 rural and 15 periurban dairy farms revealed that the concentrate was a major component in the total cost of milk production. The average net returns from milking and milch animals were found higher in case of crossbred cattle as compared to buffalo on rural as well as periurban dairy farms. The productivity of the animals maintained by the rural dairy farmers was lower than those maintained by the periurban dairy farmers.The net returns in milk production of periurban dairy farms are much higher than the rural dairy farms. Moreover, the periurban dairy farms are providing employment to the hired labour.
