The paper deals with the assessment of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) of Satna district. Present scenario and status of municipal solid waste management at Satna, Maihar, Nagod and Birsinghpur municipalities of District Satna (MP) was studied. The results of this study indicated that nondegradable, biodegradable and recyclable wastes were found in highest, moderate and in lowest quantity respectively in all the season in year 2007–08. Results of the study also reveal that the MSW generation rate was 0.260, 0.290, 0.230 and 0.218 kg/capita/day at Satna, Maihar, Nagod and Birsinghpur respectively in year 2007–08. The higher generation rate was found at Maihar municipality which may be due to the floating population of Maihar due to temple of Goddess Sharda Mata. The municipal solid waste management system of the studied municipalities is not proper and as per Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000. MSW dumping sites are also not designed as per rules. The local municipal bodies are not completely complying the rules and still the municipal solid waste management facilities are inadequate, and it is an ardent requirement to improve the solid waste management system. All the authorities of municipal council are apathetic towards municipal solid waste management. Considering all these factors such as increasing population and industrialization the strategy should be well developed and formulated.
