Beneficial effect of Eichhornia crassipes on the testes of albino rat after arsenic intoxication

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the beneficial effect of Eichhorina crassipes on the testes of albino rat after ground water arsenic intoxication. In the present study thirty five male albino rats divided into 7 groups of five rats each. The ground water was administered orally to experimental groups for 7, 14 and 21 days; while Eichhornia crassipes and ground water arsenic were administrated for 3, 7 and 14 days respectively. Therefore, the body weight, organ weight, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm sluggish motility were decreased significantly (p < 0.001) due to arsenic intoxication while increased significantly (p < 0.001) due to beneficial effect of Eichhornia crassipes root extract treatment. Eichhornia crassipes reduces the serum arsenic burden through chelation biomechanism and provides nutrients. We concluded that Eichhornia crassipes have compensated the arsenic toxicity that affects the body metabolism.
