Histopathological changes in intestine of Clarias batrachus induced by experimental Procamallanus infection

Abstract

Histopathological alterations in the intestine of Clarias batrachus infected with Procamallanus were recorded on day 15, 30, 45 and 60. The intestine of infected catfish showed pyknotic epithelial cells in mucosa, vacuolization and separation in muscle layer and submucosa, ruptured serosa, strong inflammatory edema in villus process, and ruptured, shortened and blunted tips of villi as well as separation in muscle layer after 15 days post-infection. After 30 days post-infection, the infected intestine showed ruptured and vacuolization in serosa, edema in longitudinal muscle layer and breakage, multiple fusion and blunted tips of villi. After 45 days, the changes observed were blunted and breakage in villus process, dilation of blood vessels, edema, separation of muscle layer from peritoneal epithelium, separation and blunted villi with large space, vacuolization in circular muscle layer and submucosa, separation of muscle layer from epithelium and strong inflammatory edema. After 60 days post-infection, these changes were more severe as evident by the shortened and truncated villi, strong inflammatory edema and vacuolization in peritoneum layer.
