Changes in hepatic lipid profile after combined drug treatment of hydrochlorothiazide with amiloride in albino rat

Diuretic drugs belong to a large group of agents, which induce biotransformation of many compounds in mammalian hepatocytes. The evaluation of the side effects of combined drug treatment such as hydrochlorothiazide with amiloride 100mg/kg body weight has been conducted on the hepatic lipid profile in albino rats for the treatment periods of 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Hydrochlorothiazide with amiloride treated rats showed and increased levels of hepatic total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), and low density lipoprotein (LDL) significantly (p<0.001). The levels of triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), however decreased significantly (p<0.001). These results suggested that combined drug treatment of hydrochlorothiazide with amiloride might alter hepatic function and affect metabolism of lipid and lipoproteins.
