Post helminth infection changes on the nitrogen metabolism in the myotomal muscles of Channa punctatus

Abstract

In the post-helminth infection, proteins and related molecular changes have been studied in the liver and Intestine of Channa punctatus due to the intestinal infection by Genarchopsis goppo Ozaki (1925) and liver infection by Callodistomum diaphanum Odhner (1902). Various biochemical parameters have been investigated viz. ammonia, urea and glutamate dehydrogenase. All the parameters have been assayed are showed an increase in the myotomal muscles of infected fish. In the liver and intestinal infection, ammonia content is showed an increase by about 28% and 26%, urea content is showed an increase by about 33.33% and 18.57% and glutamate dehydrogenase activity showed an increase about 63.26% and 96.64% respectively. The increase in the content of substrate and the activity levels of enzymes suggest that in the liver and intestine, the rate of Nitrogen Metabolism is greatly enhanced. These indicate that liver and intestine plays an active role in smoothing the fluctuations of metabolism, generated by helminth worms. The increase in the various biomolecules indicates biochemical adaptations of hosts to the parasitic adaptations.
