Loss of growth bioindicators in Labeo rohita exposed to Profenofos

Abstract

Effect of Profenofos, an organophosohate pesticide, on protein and lipids, as growth bioindicators, has been studied in Indian major carp, Labeo rohita. The fish was exposed chronically to sub-lethal concentration of Profenofos i.e. 0.0548 mg/l for 30 days and the level of two bioindicators, total proteins and total lipids have been investigated in the muscles of fish. The levels of both the bioindicators were found to be depleted significantly (P<0.01). The depletion was 33.18% in total proteins while 21.90% in total lipids. This depletion in protein and lipid levels would imply arrest of growth in the fish which is not conducive for economically important fishes.
