Abstract

Commiphora mukul belongs to Family Burseracae. It has been used in Ayurveda for more than 2500 years to treat a variety of ailments. The evaluation of hypolipidemic effects of such a natural medicinal product at 50 mg/kg body weight has been conducted on the serum lipid profile in albino rats for a period of 7, 15 and 30 days. Gum guggul treated rats showed significantly decreased (p<0.01) level of serum total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and TG, however the levels of HDL increased significantly (p<0.01). These results suggested that aqueous extract of gum guggul might alter the metabolism of body and help to prevent obesity, CHD and other lipid related disorders.
