Effect of alcoholic gum extract of Commiphora mukul on hepatic lipids and lipoproteins indices in albino rat

Abstract

Effect of ethanol extract of gum of Commiphora mukul on the hepatic lipid and lipoprotein profile in albino rat was rewarded. Male albino rats receiving ethanol extract of gum of Commiphora mukul at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight for 7, 15 and 30 days showed remarkable decrease in total lipids (P>0.001), total cholesterol (P<0.01), LDL (P<0.01), triglyceride (P<0.01) and VLDL (P<0.001), while HDL increased significantly (P<0.001). These data suggest that the hypolipidemic activity of ethanol extract of gum of Commiphora mukul is manifested by the inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis and LDL catabolism. The gum extract appears to be beneficial for cardiovascular and good for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
