An estimation of fluoride concentration in saliva after use of different fluoridated mouth rinse

Abstract

Recent evidence has suggested that the cariostatic effects of topical fluoride like fluoride mouth rinses are related to presence of ionic fluoride concentration in the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to estimate fluoride concentration after use of different fluoridated mouth rinses in children. In the present study three groups of 10 children each were selected in age of 8 to14 years irrespective of socioeconomic status and three mouth rinses having 904 mg/L, 226 mg/L and 113 mg/L of fluoride concentration were used. Saliva samples were collected before mouth rinse and at the time intervals of 5, 30 and 60 minutes after mouth rinse administration. Results show that at the base line no statistically significant difference in mean fluoride levels in saliva. There was statistically significant difference among the groups at 5, 30 and 60 minutes after mouth rinse (p<0.001).The mean fluoride concentration in saliva after 5 miutes of mouth rinse were 24.97 mg/L, 7.18 mg/L, 3.89 mg/L after time period of 30 minutes 6.8 mg/L, 4.65 mg/L, 2.01 mg/L and after 60 minutes 4.21 mg/L, 2.28 mg/L and 0.88 mg/L. Thus a higher fluoride concentration mouth rinse results in higher retained values of fluoride. The level of fluoride decreases with time in saliva and to maintain fluoride concentration use of fluoride mouth rinse is required.
