Seasonal variations in hydrological parameters and biodiversity of ichthyofauna of Sikandrapur reservoir, Basti, (U.P.)

Abstract

Sikandrapur reservoir, an untouched major reservoir (about 120 hec.) located in south to Basti (U.P.) was investigated for its seasonal variations in hydrological parameters and biodiversity of ichthyofauna from June 2007 to May 2008. The average value of water temperature was recorded 28.8°C, pH 7.3, transparency 59.2 cm, dissolved oxygen 6.1 mg/L, free carbon dioxide 4.3 mg/L, total dissolved solids 152.5 mg/L, total hardness 154.6 mg/L, calcium hardness 30.6 mg/L, chloride 34.3 mg/L, nitrate 6.8 mg/L, phosphate 0.7 mg/L, sulphate 63.3 mg/L, biochemical oxygen demand 3.7 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand 53.4 mg/L, fluoride 0.6 mg/L, total alkalinity 264.8 mg/L. In the present investigation comprises of 7 orders, 12 families, 20 genera, 34 fish species. Out of which 12 fish species are noted in abundance, 15 fish species are found moderate, 7 fish species are recorded rare, 19 fish species are more economic significance, while 15 fish species are less economic significance, and 13 fish species are found to be commercially important species.
