Detection of emerging VRSA/VISA strains carrying van A resistance gene through PCR in Agra region

Abstract

30 pus samples were collected from different hospitals of Agra. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 7 samples. In disk diffusion test with 30μg/μl vancomycin disk, 2 strains of S. aureus were found to be sensitive for vancomycin with 23.5mm & 22mm zone of inhibition. These 2 strains showed no amplification for van A gene. 4 strains were identified as Vancomycin Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA), with zone of inhibition between 7mm to 10mm. All four strains showed amplification for van A gene. One strain was identified as Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) with no zone of inhibition with 30μg/μl vancomycin disk which also showed amplification for van A gene. According to the results, the percentage of VRSA strains is 14.28% (1 strain out of 7 isolates) and that of VISA is 57% (4 strains out of 7 isolate) only in Agra region, which is quite alarming.
