Hypolipidemic activity of bark extract of Anthocephalus indieus in high fat diet induced rats

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate, the lipid lowering activity of Anthocephalus indicus (Family: Rubiaceae) alcoholic extract in high fat diet hyperlipidemic induced rat model. Hyperlipidemic male albino rats were administered with bark extract of Anthocephalus indicus at the dose of 50 mg/kg body weight for 7, 15, 30, and 60 days respectively show and significantly decrease in serum total cholesterol (P<0.001), low density lipoprotein (LDL) (P<0.001), triglyceride (TG) (P<0.001) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) (P<0.001); while high density lipoprotein (HDL) (P<0.001) increased significantly in serum of Albino rats. These data suggest that the hypolipidemic activity of alcoholic bark extract of Anthocephalus indicus could be responsible for increased bile acid synthesis and breakdown of excess cholesterol in hyperlipidemic conditions. The Anthocephalus indicus appears to be beneficial for cardiovascular disorders and good for the treatment of hyperlipidemic.
