Abstract

Phytotherapeutic effect of ten selected herbs was studied against ethanol intoxicated rat liver. Study was carried out in rats, to see the antioxidative and hepatoprotective role of selected herbs viz. Arctium lappa, Bacopa monnieri, Curcuma longa, Echinacea pallida, Embilica officinalis, Piper longum, Picrorhiza kurroa, Plumbago zeylanica, Terminalia chebula and Zingiber officinale with ethanol induced toxicity. Parameters including lipid peroxidation, glutathione (GSH), collagen, urinary hydroxyproline, aldehyde dehydrogenase, catalase, glutathione reductase, serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and transaminase were analyzed following oral exposure of ethanol and herbal combination. Results indicated protective effects of herbal combination by their antioxidant activity in a dose dependent manner.
