The Present study is designed to evaluate the effects of short-term SO2 inhalation (28 days) on rat liver. The histopathological changes in rat liver after 28 days SO2 exposure (80 ppm/hr/day) include moderate hepatocyte necrosis, degeneration of hepatocyte, centrilobular necrosis, ballooning degeneration and cellular debris. SO2 inhalation causes marked elevation in Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and Serum alkaline phosphatase (SALKP) activity in comparison to control rats. There is a significant reduction in body weight, food consumption and liver weight of albino rat after inhalation of toxic gas.
