Abstract

The oral administration of alcoholic extract of C. siphonanthus (R.Br.) and A. paniculata (Nees.) leaf extract at the dose level of 250 and 500 mg./kg. body weight/day for 30 and 60 days brought a significant decrease in the weights of testis and epididymis of albino rats. Administration of 250 mg./kg. dose of both the plant extracts for 30 days mildly affected the histoarchitecture of the testes and epididymis. But administration of 500 mg./kg. body weight/day dose for 60 days produced significant reduction in the size of the tubules and marked degeneration of spermatozoa.

On comparing the effects of both the plants it was found that A. paniculata (Nees.) revealed more drastic effects on testes and epididymis of albino rats as compared to C. siphonanthus. The LD50 for both the plants was more than 1 gm./kg.
