Impact of lead on germination physiology of certain wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract

A laboratory experiment was set up in order to quantify the effect of lead on crop plants in a simple way. In this investigation we studied the impact of different concentrations of lead(T1−10−1M,T2−10−2M,T3−10−3 M, T4−10−4M, T5−10−5M, T6−10−6 M and T7−Control. on germination physiology of five wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (HW 2045, HD 2733, KO307, KO 402 and HD 2954) using different parameters like growth, phytotoxicity, protein content and sugar content.. From the results it was found,% germination,shoot and root length, fresh weight,dry weight of seeds of five wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars decreased significantly (Pe”5%) with decreasing concentration of lead. The effect of lead were more pronounced and significant in terms of % phytotoxicity of shoot and root among the five wheat cultivars. Increasing concentration of lead significantly inhibited the chlorophyll and protein synthesis in the five wheat cultivars. From the results it was also found that the lead concentration of 10−1,10−2 M were lethal for germination and growth of the different wheat cuiltivars Root length was inhibited more with respect to shoot length.
