Cytoprotective effect of Emblica officinalis against Endosulfan induced toxicity in liver of Clarias batrachus: An ultrastructural study.

Abstract

Effect of aqueous extract of Emblica officinalis fruit (EOF) was investigated against endosulfan induced hepatotoxicity in freshwater air-breathing fish, Clarias batrachus. Adult healthy catfish were exposed to 0.004 and 0.008 ppm endosulfan for 4, 8 and 12 days. SGPT and SGOT of experimental fish were assessed and histopathological anomalies in liver were observed under TEM. The fruit extract of Emblica officinalis was administered to pre-endosulfan treated groups @ 100 mg/kg b.w. for 2 and 4 weeks and accordingly SGPT and SGOT and histopathological changes were recorded. The hepatic tissues showed significant recovery after EOF extract treatment for 28 days. Significant (P<0.05) recovery in otherwise elevated SGPT and SGOT were also observed. The EOF extract treatment alone to control group did not show any significant changes. Besides when pre-endosulfan treated groups were examined after 28 days they did not show any significant correction in otherwise elevated SGPT and SGOT. Perfect correlation between biochemical and histopathological findings signifies the hepatoprotective effect of EOF extract against endosulfan induced toxicity in fish.
