Some of the leaf mining Coleoptera, inhabiting the entire region lying south or the Himalayas and comprising India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and SriLanka, collectively referred to as the Indian subcontinent, possess the potential of turning into serious pests of cultivated crops. Of the vast multitude of Coleoptera inhabiting the region, only 21 are positively known to be leaf miners and their distribution, habits, biology and hosts are listed. Family Chrysomelidae: sub-family Alticinae is represented by Aphthona nigritabris Duv, Chaetocnema basalis Baly, Clitea picta Baly, Sphaeroderma brevicornis Jacoby, Throscoryssa citri Maulik; sub-family Hispinae by: Assamangulia cuspidata Maulik, Doclylispa albopilisa Gestro, Dicladispa armigera Oliv., Oncocephala tuberculata Oliv., Philodonta modesta Weise, Platypria andrewesi Weise, P. echidna Cuer., P. hystrix Fabr., Promecotheca cumingi Baly; Family Buprestidae:sub-famiiy Agrilinae by: Trachys bicolor Kerr., T. herilla Obenb., T. dasi Thery; Family Curculionidae:sub-family Rhynchaeninae by Rhynchaenus mangiferae Marshall, Rhynchaenus sp., sub-family Ceutorhynchinae by: Hypurus bertrandi (Perris); and sub-family Rhynchitinae by: Deporaus marginatus Pasc. Hypurus bertrandi is the first record of its occurrence in India, the host being kulfa saag, Portulaca oleracea.
