Abstract

Forty-eight species collected from North-West India have been described. Of these, the eight known species have been redescribed in the light of Indian fauna, whereas remaining forty species, viz, substramentum, thuligadensis, rajasthanensis, fuscoluridus, viridis, striatulus, mohanensis, tuberculosus, boomensis, argentosquamus, squamafraxineus, arorai, upadhyai, acristatus, kuluensis, planus, spinaparamerus, lucidus, campestris, vatsai, impectinatus, concoloris, holontelius, plantaferusus, agrestis, triticumunis, inlustris, solanensis, subargillus, rameshi, maisus, repercussus, jacksoni, subfaenum, sublapideus, souslapisus, tuberosus, planocorpus, saltatus and confertus are new additions to Agrypnus from India. Morphologically, these species show a wide range of variations in size, colour and arrangement of scales, length and colour of antennae, dimension and appearance of pronotal surface, type of punctation on pronotum, shape of the tip of posterior angles, prothoracic carinae, lateral margin of prothorax, degree of development of propleural and metasternal grooves for accommodating anterior and middle tarsi, length of prosternopleural grooves, shape of anterior margin of metasternum, breadth of odd interstriae in relation to others, shape of distal extremities of elytrae, colour of scutellum and the surface of the last abdominal sternite. These parts provide distinctive characters for separating the species. Besides these, the male genitalia with different combination of characteristics of its components are highly specific. The phallobase is variable in shape. Each paramere bears invariably a subapical process which may or may not bear a notch behind it. The outer margin of paramere is concave with different degree of curvature, but in a few species lateral bulgings with different degree of development are also present. The aedeagus is extremely variable in shape and length.
