Abstract

A shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rondani and stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), resistant pure line sorghum variety SPV 1015 (PGS-1) was developed at the Division of Entomology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in 1987 through pedigree selection from the cross P601 x P201. This exhibited multiple resistance to both the shootfly and stem borer over three years (1988–90) at Delhi as well as in multilocation trials of the All-India Coordinated Sorghum Improvement Project during 1990–91. This variety possessed all the desirable agronomic traits. A few morphological characters, viz., hairiness of ligule and midrib, stout stem, and small internodes were identified in this variety to affect the establishment of immature stages of these two key pests.
