Abstract

Indigenous collections of 179 accessions of Solanum melongena and 39 accessions of wild Solanum were screened for field resistance to brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guen. Among the wild Solanum spp., six accessions, viz., IC135923 - S. surattense; NIC-22910 - S. sisymbrifolium; NIC-22907 - S. indicum; IC-135992, NL/94/3 - S. viarum and NL/93/1 - S. aculeatissimum were rated resistant; and·three accessions, viz., A-669 - S. aculeatissimum; IC-111297 - S. indicum and IC-135913 - S. viarum were moderately resistant. One accession, viz., IC-I11407-S. aculeatissimum was rated as tolerant. Among the cultivated types, two accessions (IC-089864A and IC-144524) of S. melongena were rated tolerant. S. aculeatissimum accessions, thus, showed maximum variability.
