Abstract

Four species, vit, Maniola pulchella (Felder), M. pulchra pulchra (Felder), M. lupinus cheena (Moore), and M. devendra devendra (Moore) were collected from the north-west Himalaya during 1991–96. The genitalic characters such as the uncus, tegumen, brachia, valvae and aedeagus revealed that all the four species are broadly congeneric. The female genitalia studied in two species, viz, M. lupinus cheena and M. devendra devendra showed that the signum is always present. An updated key of these species was prepared. M. pulchella and M. pulchra were collected from a new locality i.e., Purthi in Pangi valley in Himachal Pradesh (India). M. lupinus cheena is reported from Pangi, Kalpa, Puh, Sangla, Nichar and Bharmour for the first time in the western Himalaya. M. devendra devendra was quite common and its inclusion in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 need to be rejected.
