Abstract

Seven entries viz., GMU-1251, PI-306983, JLSF Nos. 213, 217 and 291; A-1 and Bhima showed resistance to aphid, Uroleucon compositae while Co-1 was found highly susceptible. The studies on the mechanism of resistance present in safflower against aphid revealed that antixenosis (phenetic resistance relating to biophysical factors of plant characters), antibiosis (adverse effect of the plant on biotic potential, appearance of alate form, chemical factor of negative correlation of nitrogen content of plant with pest resistance) and tolerance were the major mechanisms of resistance found operating in different genotypes.
