Abstract

As revealed from the series of on-farm experiments in agro-ecological situations of Western Orissa during 2002 and 2003, the incidence of rhizome fly was the lowest in ginger plants grown in black soil having neutral to alkaline pH. High incidence was recorded in acidic sandy loam soil. Planting of ginger in Jan-Feb was found to be the least affected by the fly as compared to March-April, April-May and May-June. Crop planted during monsoon was subjected to heavy incidence. Varieties like Suprabha, Suruchi and Surabhi from Orissa were susceptible to fly as compared to Rio-degenero and local varieties. However, variety Supriya was found moderately resistant to rhizome fly. Rhizome treatment at planting followed by soil drenching at 50 DAP with chlorpyriphos (20 EC) was very effective in checking fly incidence.
