Abstract

A study was conducted to ascertain Lantana camara L. varieties in the highveld, middleveld and lowveld of the country based on morphological features and the existence of biological control agents which are known to have been introduced and established in South Africa up to 2006. Based on flower colour, three lantana biotypes with varying distribution and flowering periods were observed. Six natural enemies released in South Africa were found during the survey. Three of these, i.e. Orthezia insignis Browne, Telionemia scrupulosa Stål and Octotoma scabripennis Guérin-Méneville were found only in the highveld. Hypena laceratalis Walker, Ophiomyia camara Spencer and Ophyiomia lantanae Froggart were present in all regions.
