Abundance of insect pollinators in citrus crop and their impact on fruit setting under tarai Agroclimatic condition
Abstract
A total of 12 insect visitors of flowers were observed in citrus crop. Among the pollinators the Hymenoptera constituted major group of insects visiting he flower of citrus including Apis dorsata Fab., Apis cerana indica Fab., Trigona spp., Campsomeriella megachalis F., and C. collaris F., Among the Dipterans, syrphid flies were the most frequent visitors including Syrphus corollae Fab., Episyrphus balteatus De Geer, Spherophoria spp. L., and Melanostoma spp. L. The bagging had a significant effect on fruit setting as the percent fruit setting was higher (8.4 -12%) in panicles that were left unbagged for open pollination as compared to completely bagged panicles (1.2 -8.0%).
