Abstract

In the present study, a popular rice variety IR 20 was selected to characterize volatile profile change due to the two major insect pest infestation (Brown plant hopper Nilaparvata lugens and Yellow stem borer Scirpophaga incertulas). Volatile collection was made using air entrainment method and were characterized using GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry). Collected volatiles were checked for their attraction towards the predator of Brown plant hopper (BPH), Mirids Cyrtorhinus lividipennis (Reuter) using Y arm olfactometer. Terpenoids were identified as the major compounds differentiating from the healthy plants. Significant attraction was observed in the predators towards BPH infested volatiles. The results of the study suggested its usage for the management of the pest under field conditions.
