Polyethylene degradation by larvae of wax moth

Abstract

Recently various reports on biodegradation of plastics by wax moths, Galleria mellonella and Achoria grisella have emerged upon and these offer an opportunity for development of technology to degrade the polyethylene polymer biologically. Galleria mellonella and Achoria grisella which are most damage causing honeybee pests were recently found causing disintegration of the plastic waste. Present review article provides the detailed description about the morphology of the insect and also provides description about plastic degradation capacity of wax moth. This also includes comprehensive informative account on microbiota dependent and microbiota independent biodegradation of polyethylene.
