Field screening in landraces of hot peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) against significant pest complex
Abstract
A total of twenty hot peppers landraces with widely divergent phenotypic and genotypic makeup were assessed against major pests like hot pepper thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood), yellow mites (Polyphagotarsonemus latus Banks) and fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera Hübner). The investigation revealed that none of the landrace was classified as resistant to any of the insect pest. Three landraces (Purple bird eye, Black Grape, and cream bullet) showed moderate resistance to hot peppers thrips while five landraces (Carolina chilli, Purple bird eye, Milk white, Black long, and Cream bullet) were found as moderately resistant to yellow mites based on the leaf curl index (LCI) per cent. Whereas, amongst landraces screened against fruit borer 9 showed moderate resistance and 7 were found suceptible while 4 were highly susceptible.
