Floods in Assam: a Post-Disaster Impact on Women and Livelihood

Floods are a recurrent phenomenon in India, and it is a disaster creating massive loss of life and property. Assam is one such affected state, but the intensity of destruction remains neglected due to biased media coverage. The main reason is the feminisation of poverty leading to women, in general, as an excluded group in our male-dominated society. Their unpaid nature of work within the house and low-paid nature of work outside house are not considered as worthy. Women are the one who suffer the most in post-disaster situation in any flood-affected region. Their livelihood in the village, which is mainly farm based, eroded and resulted in impoverishment and vulnerability.
