Abstract

A study was carried out to examine the trends, growth patterns and instability analysis in area, production and productivity of chickpea through time series data for the period of 33 years (i.e., 1980–81 to 2012–13) keeping in view the diversity in growth performance of the crop in difference zones. Data analysis revealed the remarkable increase in all these three parameters in case of SZ followed by CZ whereas, in case of NEPZ and NWPZ, it showed a decreasing trend with time. The compound growth rate for area (7.19%) and production (10.59%) also showed significantly increasing trend for SZ. However, the productivity has maintained a positive growth rate in all these zones and the country as a whole, with a maximum value of 3.17% in SZ and a minimum of 0.54% in NWPZ. During the period of study, the country as a whole also recorded instabilities in area (5.19%), production (13.97%) and productivity (11.23%). The problems pertaining to each zone and the country as a whole were also discussed.
