A field experiment was conducted during two consecutive Kharif seasons of 2012–13 and 2013–14 at the research farm of College of Agriculture, Lembucherra, Tripura to enhance productivity potential of pigeonpea based intercropping systems in lateritic red soils (tilla lands) of Tripura under NEH region. Nine treatment combinations comprising of diverse intercropping systems along with sole crop of pigeonpea were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Intercropping system consisted of single row of main crop (pigeonpea) with both two rows of intercrops (viz., cowpea, blackgram, greengram and sesame at 1: 2) and one row of intercrops (viz., blackgram, greengram, sesame and groundnut at 1: 1) in additive series. Pigeonpea+black gram (1: 1) performed better in terms of net return and PEY (Pigeonpea Equivalent Yield) over all other combinations followed by pigeonpea + green gram (1: 1). The study suggested that besides properly utilizing available resources under rainfed mid hills of northeastern hill region, cultivation of pigeonpea + blackgram as a intercropping system could be remunerative in place of sole pigeonpea.
